THE RAD^x entrepreneurial business incubator initiative at Vanderbilt University announced the field of business concepts and initiatives that were formally unveiled during a May 25 Pitch competition.

The initiative is sponsored by the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences (DRRS), within the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM).

Here is more information about the 17 teams recently recognized.

Winning teams received $10,000 business development awards from the Evelyn Selby Stead Fund for Innovation:

► CrowdRad (Martin Jordanov, Isaac Osei and others) - A web/mobile application allowing radiologists to post challenging unknown cases and obtain independent answers from his/her peers around the world.

► Image Innovations (Allen Newton, Bennett Landman, and others) - A platform for translation of medical image processing tools into the clinical practice environment.

► RAD3D (Sumit Pruthi and others) - 3D printing of customized continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks for children with craniofacial abnormalities.

► Note: RAD^x also announced that an initial RAD^x participant -- Not an Emergency, led by Anne-Marie Danko and others -- had after the start of the RAD^xprocess separately secured undisclosed VUMC support for its proposal, which is designed to reduce emergency department volumes. The team, thus, did not compete on May 25, but was recognized during the program.

Other teams that completed the RAD^x Innovation Challenge included:

► Brain Trauma Marker (Aashim Bhatia and others) - A novel multidisciplinary approach to clinical biomarker discovery in traumatic brain injury

► Direct Healthcare USA (Matt Taber, David Taber, and others) - A low-cost direct payment model for primary care

► LSIA (Apperson Johnson, Eric Tkaczyk, and others) - A platform for large-scale image analysis (LSIA) using collections of available medical images.

► Nurtery (team not disclosed) - A new infant crib mobile for use in pediatric hospital environments.

► ORtrack (Jim Fiechtl and others) - A secure physician and patient communication tool for promoting operating room efficiency and patient engagement.

► PrintedCT - (team not disclosed) An algorithm and platform for producing consumer-facing 3D-printed imaging data.

► Rad VIP (Kevin Wilson and others) - Software for displaying and interacting with medical imaging data in a 3D virtual environment.

► Rayos Contra Cancer (Benjamin Li and others) - A network of radiation treatment centers in low-resource countries

► RadValue (Brent Savoie, Jim Stefansic, and others) - A predictive/prescriptive analytics application leveraging radiology information with artificial intelligence technology to guide care management interventions

► See-N-me (Mary Ann Keenan) - A mobile digital application for educating pediatric and adult patients about imaging procedures and radiation exposure.

► SnapRad (Bryan Hartley and others) - A mobile professional social media application for sharing information and crowdsourcing difficult cases

► Umsindo (Vandiver Chaplin, Patrick Baird, and others) - A portable, low-cost, clinical-quality ultrasound scanner targeted at healthcare providers in developing countries.

► VRMR (Kevin Wilson, Sumit Pruthi, and others) - A virtual reality application for habituating pediatric patients to the imaging environment prior to their procedure, reducing requirements for sedation.
