NCN's Sid Chambless connects entrepreneurs and investors,
hopes local Tech investment proves to be 'an awakening giant'

At a hair over six feet, Sid Chambless would have a tough time playing center on any pro basketball team. However, as executive director of Nashville Capital Network (NCN), Chambless has in short order assisted other key players in taking Angel-capital deals to the basket. The clock started running eighteen months ago on nonprofit NCN, which matches local entrepreneurs and investors.

Chambless, 31, says he and his squad of Owen MBA students and local advisors "have looked at over 100 companies" since NCN was unveiled in September 2003, adding, "we've provided feedback or referrals to most of those." He says NCN has, to date, had some form of contact with more than 160 investment-seeking enterprises now in the NCN database. (Chambless points proudly to the fact that all four of his interns from the past year quickly landed jobs in the financial sector, including three students who remain in the Nashville area.)

To date, six proposals that Chambless brought before NCN-linked Angel investors have won Angel funding: Capital Confirmation (see Upfront, this issue), Pathfinder Therapeutics, Horizon Resource Group, Smartvue Corporation, Tricycle, Plumgood Food. Most of the transactions have involved ventures in which applied technologies have been significant factors in the enterprises. Additionally, NCN assisted ProfitPoint in securing investment by Comdata. All of NCN's Angel-investment and related announcements are here.

Chambless says it will be difficult to sustain that pace in the year ahead; but, as NCN's credibility and familiarity within the investment community grow, NCN activity will grow.

Chambless explains his hopes:  "Nashville's potential involvement in financing technology ventures could be huge -- it could eventually prove to be the sleeping giant in our backyard. We have very capable Angel and venture-capital investors locally who are intimately involved in such sectors as health care, health care services, business services, financial, biomedical, engineering, publishing and other fields. They are capable of transferring their expertise and capital at any time into other sectors, such as into technologies that enable the businesses they already know. This diversity is a real strength. As they learn about the impact of technologies on sectors in which they're already active investors, and as they monitor returns on successful high-growth ventures, including technology, local investors are comfortable exploring technology opportunities. I believe they'll be increasingly willing to invest and often willing to help mentor the entrepreneur."

"However," he quickly adds, "investors insist that 'cool' technologies are accompanied with solid business plans that illustrate exactly how the tech venture will make money; and, equally important, that the venture is in the hands of an experienced management team. Yes, they also need to see real traction in your business, reflected in recurring revenue and RoI. These are people who are not afraid of risk, but they want to manage it, tightly. After all, they're being asked to enter the picture after the typical entrepreneur has consumed all the capital he or she can get from their home equity, their friends and families, and there's a lot at stake for everyone. In many ways, these are the hardest deals to finance. Because of this, NCN spends a significant portion of our time and resources on educational and advisory initiatives. NCN Angels aren't here today, gone tomorrow investors who swoop-in from elsewhere: these are folks who plan to live, work and invest here for the balance of their lives. So, we feel an obligation to give entrepreneurs our straightest feedback, and to take to our Angel network only propositions that emerge from our formal review and advisory process."

Chambless served two years as Vice President-Business Development for Surfari, Inc., driving their capital-raising, sales and partnering efforts, and eventually co-leading Surfari's sale to Coolsavings.com. Earlier, he served in a business development role with the Nashville Predators, during the team's startup phase. The Georgia native earned his M.B.A. at Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University, in May 2003; and, earned his Vanderbilt B.A. in American History in 1996. He is active in The Tomorrow Fund of Middle Tennessee.

For the third consecutive year, Chambless will participate in selecting entrepreneurs who will present during next fall's Tennessee Valley Venture Forum, Oct. 6-7 at Knoxville. Earlier this year, NCN announced it had become a founding member of the nation's new Angel Capital Association (release here.)
