CORE BTS team of Jensen and Quillin rely on experience in
network infrastructure, communications, systems engineering

Joel Jensen and Mike Quillin, CORE Business Technology Solutions'
co-leaders in Nashville, quickly admit that achieving "trusted advisor" status in a marketplace like Nashville requires not only expertise, but also patience and a willingness to look beyond opportunities to sell quickly whatever "solution" an often
desperate customer seems ready to buy.

They believe that's why most CORE BTS business in middle Tennessee is a result of referrals from such customers as Spheris, American Color, CHD Meridian, Gideons International, Dialogic Communications, Bass
Berry & Sims, Imperial Group and MedSolutions.

Although the firm adopted its current brand less than two years ago, CORE's 10-year advance has been steady, and the Indianapolis-based company now has $60 million in revenues, and a pool of 170 IT professionals. Standout elements of the CORE BTS portfolio include Communications Infrastructure
; True Life-Cycle Services; Compliance of IT Systems and Associated Processes
.

What's driving CORE growth? Jensen explains: "Given mandates like HIPAA compliance, plus security threats and the need to migrate toward newer technologies, like Voice over IP and converged network solutions, there's a lot of pressure out there to deliver effective solutions -- and there's a lot of business pain
awaiting those who don't. On top of that, the pace of change is incredible. Half our assignments today center around technologies and services that either didn't exist or were in absolute infancy when we established our Nashville office six years ago. People are looking for bench strength. In fact, bigger clients tend to bring us in when their inhouse staffs are maxed-out and they need help with business-critical projects. Small and medium-sized customers bring us in to be their IT partner, for access to our people and to a knowledge base that rivals the very biggest firms."

Mike Quillin says, "So, overall, when we're invited to discuss a customer's requirements, we know that if we don't actually get down to discussing honestly and thoroughly the underlying issues, the solution will probably be only a band-aid, and performance will only deteriorate further, no matter what architectural or hardware solutions are proposed. So, we don't consciously get into that business. Meanwhile, here in Nashville our work has grown 25 to 50 percent annually the past six years, without a single layoff. That stability means that people we recruited with deep experience have stuck with us."

Q
uillin, who modestly notes he earned every one of his business-development scars during the "Great
Depression" following the Dot.com burst, says that CORE BTS managed to grow even in the worst of times, largely thanks to the so-called "little guys" who fought to survive during the downtown. "That why, today, we value that part of the market, and don't spend all our time chasing the 'gravy' and 'big-game' accounts."

Jensen, a 43-year-old, University of Iowa-educated engineer, has nearly 20 years experience in IT services, including an earlier stint with Xerox Connect in Nashville, where he was managing principal for Network Solutions; and, a dozen years with EDS, handling Infrastructure Development at Saturn, and engineering new technologies into GM's flagship Cadillac plant at Detroit. Jensen is named in nine EDS patents in the client server and infrastructure architecture areas. Quillin, 47, a U. of Indiana grad, has worked side-by-side with Jensen for many of the past fifteen years, and his career prior to CORE BTS includes Xerox Connect, The Future Now, Savin, Lee Data and Infotron.

CORE BTS is a Tech Titan sponsor of Nashville Technology Council. CORE BTS is hiring in Nashville and in other cities. For details, visit here or write tennessee@corebts.com

The State OIR's Information Technology Professional Services (ITPRO) Contract (currently ITPRO.03) is the mechanism by which the State procures IT services and staffing through a competitive, multiple-source of supply approach. When rebid in 2003, three firms won ITPRO roles (Ciber Inc., KBM Enterprises, TEKsystems). The third and final year of ITPRO.03 ends Feb. 28, 2006. Thus, during the July-August 2005 period OIR will probably seek to identify the next group of ITPRO participants, with three to five firms thought likely to win roles. OIR Procurement and Contract Management has stated its objective of "re-awarding ITPRO contracts on economic terms more favorable to the State." The Tennessean's online audience: A "Media Audit" report by International Demographics
(Houston/New York) is offered as back-up for The Tennessean's online assertion that Tennessean.com is "Middle Tennessee's #1 Online News Source." According to Media Audit Vice President Sandy Wickman yesterday, Media Audit results were based on 700 completed telephone interviews of Nashvillians age 18 or older, conducted Aug. 17-Sept. 30 2004. The survey effort gauged local consumer behavior, and print and broadcast media audiences, as well as Web attendance. Wickman said all sites in the Nashville market were included in the online results. Tennessean Online Editor Lisa Green explained yesterday that results provided to The Tennessean, which Wickman says is an International Demographics customer, showed Tennessean.com being visited by 29.2% of adults in the market during the month prior to the interviews, versus NewsChannel5.com's reported 16.4% second-place online ranking. Wickman says NewsChannel5 is not a Media Audit customer. While Wickman says only customers may release rankings information, some other Nashville data from the Media Audit survey are available via the web.
