of "An Architecture for Robot Intelligence,"
through a venture known as Universal Robotics,
which will address a current gap in
automated supply-chain technology, by enabling
forklifts to learn
their way around warehouses. Peters -- who notes

preparing
to pursue investors for their venture, the
technology for which is being used under license

Chapman's Northpoint Software &
Solutions seeds innovation in Nashville
Okay, it's an extraordinary notion;
but, after seeing a presentation or two by Dave
Chapman, now partly transplanted to Nashville, one
begins to suspect that Dave may know more details
about why new ventures and IT projects succeed,
fail or fail to produce adequate returns than any
other single businessman in the world.
If true, this would explain why
currently three major operating divisions of IBM
and a host of other companies, governments and
institutions have retained Chapman and his
Northpoint Software &
Solutions
since its founding in 1992.
Chapman, chief advocate and now chairman of
NTC's Nashville Technology Innovation
Conference (May 18), wastes none of his
boundless energy trying to conceal his passion for
the knowledge and value he and Northpoint clients
ascribe to a series of Northpoint software
products, which he describes as containing nothing
less than "all the steps, technologies and
processes built into them that organizations need
to execute initiatives that will achieve
best-in-class performance." His approach
emphasizes leveraging risk, and focusing on
increasing value.
Sit down with Dave in front of a demo, and
doubts begin to evaporate. He seems personally to
have vetted results of more than 45 million
manhours of industry- and university-based
research that has gone into the algorithms and
case studies that drive Northpoint software and
inform the firm's consensus-building
implementation for clients.
Many of Northpoint's products and services
support the building of IT business plans, IT
marketing plans, corporate development (M&A,
etc.), and such things as Security, and software
research and development. Sometimes, Chapman's
team has built a product around a typical CEO
question, such as, "How well is my business
running?"; or, "What's the purpose of that
business process?"
Particularly eye-catching is a set of
products designed for Angel- and Venture-Capital
investors, tools for addressing pre-acquisition
analysis; enterprise risk assessment; acquisition
integration; and, a component addressing factors
related to new ventures and technologies gaining
"market traction" upon launch.
As Northpoint's chairman and CEO, Chapman
planted the Northpoint flag in middle Tennessee
five years ago, when during a business visit he
"fell in love with" and then bought a 30-acre
estate in Gallatin. Today, while most of NP's
two-dozen FTE workforce remain based in New
Hampshire and the Boston area, Chapman says he
plans to build resources here. As evidence: He
recently hired Michael Galo as his Brentwood-based
Regional Vice President. Galo was previously
VP-Technical Services for NexTime (now Kronos),
and prior to that was Inacom's Business/IT
engagement director, and earlier a Sr. Consultant
with Apple Computer, Inc.
Amid consulting and licensing activities
worldwide, Chapman found time to introduce
management software to Vanderbilt Owen GSM
students for three years, much as he has done at
Rutgers, Clark, Southern Methodist, Belmont and
other universities. A year ago, he stepped-in as a
speaker for a State of Tennessee OIR conference.
Since then, he has focused increasingly on a
cluster of mid-America cities anchored by
Nashville and including Chicago, Dallas (home of
NP client EDS) and Austin.
Chapman began his IT career as an IBM
engineer in 1958, and held a variety of Big Blue
jobs, including GM of manufacturing for key IBM
products; and, as director of IBM's programming
center, with global responsibility. At 29, he won
a coveted IBM award for his software-development
efforts, and he holds a patent in the
semiconductor field. He also was GM-Operations for
IBM's Rochester, Minn., facility. Subsequently, he
wore such titles as SVP, Data General; CEO,
Computer Power Group/Americas; and chairman,
president and CEO of Cullinet Software. He
currently serves on the boards of directors of
five companies, including Brooktrout and Tacit
Networking, Inc.
A
native of Pittsfield, in the Berkshires of Western
Massachusetts, Chapman an EE degree from Syracuse
University, and a Master's from the Sloan School
of Management at MIT; and, he is a recipient of
MIT's Corporate Leadership Award. He is a member
of the Board for SMU's Cox School of Management IT
Operations Management group. Chapman published a
book, Smart Business (Making Sure
Investments in IT Hit the Mark Every Time).
